Hay Ho! Rooney’s back in action

WAYNE ROONEY has told boss Alex Ferguson he will be back for the big Manchester derby on Saturday.

The England striker was forced to sit out United’s last two league matches due to an ankle injury – and the champions struggled without him.

He was a surprise starter for the Champions League quarter-final, second leg with Bayern Munich last Wednesday.

Rooney lasted only 55 minutes before hobbling out of the tie.

But he has told friends the ankle is now fine and that he should be ready to line up at Eastlands.

That will be a huge boost to boss Ferguson as his team have mustered only one point in two matches without their 34-goal leading scorer.

United lost 2-1 to title rivals Chelsea and drew 0-0 at Blackburn.

The Old Trafford chief hinted on Friday he hoped to have Rooney back for the derby – but he would need time and treatment on the injury.

Fergie said last week: “It’s not serious and I think he will be ready for the City game.”

The United squad was given Monday off but Rooney went in to do some light training and receive more work on his right ankle.

Defender Rio Ferdinand will need treatment on a groin strain if he is to make the crunch clash.
