Beckham closing in on full fitness

David Beckham is very close to full fitness after recovering from an Achilles injury. The experienced midfielder was ruled out of the World Cup after he tore his left Achilles in March while playing for AC Milan during a loan spell at the club. He is trying to make a comeback for LA Galaxy on 11th September in a match against Columbus Crew. David Beckham told the official website of La Galaxy “The doctors’ original (return) date was October 1, but I always kind of said I want to be ready before then.
“I’ll keep my fingers crossed and hopefully will play in part of the game here against Columbus. I’ll be on the bench, and hopefully I’ll get on the field for 15-20 minutes. That’s what I’m looking at.”

However, Beckham was included in the management team and was part of the English set up in South Africa. After a disastrous World Cup showing by England, manager Fabio Capello sensationally announced that Beckham is too old to feature in the future competitive games for England. He received severe criticism on this, since then he has changed his stance and has said that the door is open for Beckham to play for the national side. Beckham never thought of retirement, he said.

“When you first have an injury like this and realize how serious an injury it is, you worry that you’re not going to get back to playing top-flight soccer. But that probably was in my head for only about 10 seconds.”

However, Beckham must prove his fitness in order to make a comeback to the national side. He has a month to prove his fitness to manager Fabio Capello ahead of England’s Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro.
