Barcelona’s record winning run of 16 games was ended as they were held to a 1-1 draw against relegation threatened Sporting Gijon. Draw against Sporting Gijon was Barcelona’s first of the season as they had won all of their previous away matches. David Barral opened up the scoring on 16th minute and it looked like that Sporting will hold on to their lead but David Villa finished a sublimed chip to score against his former club to equalize for Barcelona.
This means that Barcelona are now 8 points clear of Real Madrid with having played one game more than their arch rivals Real Madrid who play Espanyol this weekend.
Joaquin scored both goals for Valencia as they came from behind to register a 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid. Things just cannot get better for the Madrid based club as they are yet to win in 2011. Moreover, Atletico Madrid have lost their last 4 matches without scoring a goal so ultimately pressure is increasing on Sanchez Flores. Atletico took the lead thanks to an early goal from Jose Antonio Reyes on 3rd minute but they were not able to keep their lead when Joaquin scored for Valencia to level matters.
Diego Forlan missed a penalty at the start of second half and it proved to be a costly error as Joaquin again scored 4 minutes from time to give Valencia all three points. Victory over Atletico was 6th in 8 games for Valencia whereas Atletcio has now lost 6 matches out of their last 8 which has affected their league position greatly. Valencia are now up to third two points ahead of Villareal on 4th spot.
Manueal Arrana scored a last minute winner for Racing Santander against Sevilla to climb up to 12 in the table.
