Options Open For Aquilani

Players have come in. Players have left. Some players are linked to come next whereas some are destined to leave but the biggest transfer story for Liverpool in this transfer window has been Alberto Aquilani.  The Italian midfielder still doesn’t know where his future lies. After returning from Juventus on loan, Aquilani has wasted little time to divide Liverpool supporters and even the club management about his skill and ability.  The 27 year old midfielder has made impressive contribution in pre season for Reds. Such has been the impact of Aquilani that Reds owner described the midfielder as the missing link of the team through his latest tweet.

Ever since the transfer of Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid, Liverpool have been missing the creative midfielder who can actually make a pass or give a through ball to front line or wingers. For that purpose, Aquilani was brought in from AS Roma but injury plagued first season at Reds forced new manager Roy Hodgson to sent him on loan to Juventus, a decision which has been criticized by a vast majority of Liverpool supporters. At one stage, Juventus looked favorites to sign Aquilani but their refusal to meet the asking price and with Reds signing Jordan Henderson and Charlie Adam, Aquilani’s future is still not clear.

However, one thing is for sure that Liverpool supporters have been impressed with Aquilani from the performances they have seen from him in the pre season matches. Some of the supporters have even called him as the best player in the pre season but the problem for Reds is that their midfield is now overcrowded. They have Steven Gerrard who is almost a certain in the starting lineup when fit. Lucas, Raul Meireles were probably the best players for Reds last season and with Charlie Adam and Henderson arriving, chances are very slim for the Italian to take a starting place in the squad.

But there is another perspective in Aquilani Saga. Liverpool fans have been demanding strength in depth for their squad for several seasons. Now at last when they do have some strength in depth then there have been cries for offloading players which is not the right way if any teams want to challenge for top honors. Some fans say Aquilani is too light weight to play in premier league but they should not forget that the boy has great first touch and also has a perfect eye for passing. So a fully fit Aquilani can probably do a lot of good passing work in the final third of any team.  You don’t have always to be physical in premier league. Similarly, you don’t always have to be just like Drogba or Michael Essien. Light weight players like Yossi Benayoun, Luis Garcia and most noticeably Gianfranco Zola have been massive success at their respective clubs. If you have good first and an eye for pass then surely, any player can success and same is the case with Aquilani as well.

It can be said that Aquilani is man on a mission at Liverpool, he is a player which definitely wants to prove, his worth to Liverpool fans.   So if Damien Comolli wants to reduce the wage bill for Reds squad then he must consider offloading players like Philip Degen, David Ngog, Christian Poulsen and arguably Joe Cole because Aquilani among all of other midfielders is the most creative one in terms of passing and one touch movement.
