India secured one of the greatest win in their cricketing history with a 29 run success against Pakistan leads them into the final against Sri Lanka in Mumbai.  India won the toss and elected to bat first.

Explosive batsman Virendar Sehwag opened the innings with great hitting. He scored 9 boundaries out of his total 38 runs. However, things started to change when Wahab Riaz got the first wicket of Sehwag. Sachin Tendulkar who was dropped 4 times by Pakistan fielders played a great part in his 85 runs which ultimately proved to be the decisive thing in deciding the outcome of the match. Australia's most successful captain, Ricky Ponting has resigned from Australia's captain in both Tests and ODIs following their quarter-final exit from the World Cup but will be available for selection as a batsman in both formats.

Michael Clarke is expeted to take over as the captain, after Ponting’s resignation.

"Today I've decided to stand down as captain of the test team and the one-day team as of now.

The main reason for me is I think it's the right time … I wanted to make sure that I gave the next captain every opportunity I possibly could to make sure he has as much experience going forward in the next couple of big events that we will play.

I will continue to play and am available for both the one day and test teams” He told the press conference in SCG.

Ricky Ponting was criticized after his team lost Ashes to England, and now when Australia are out of the World Cup, he was under immense pressure to quit.

Under his captainship, Australia had played 77 tests and won 48 out of them, most for any captain. He also captained Australia for 228 ODIs and won 164 out of them. He was the captain of the team who won World Cups in 2003 and 2007.

With his decision on Tuesday, the era of the most successful captain has come to and end.

After defeating England in quarter finals, Sri Lanka is ready to face New Zealand in the semi finals. Spinners have played a big role in the subcontinent throughout the tournament and both the teams will be relying on them for victory.

However it is doubtful that the Sri Lankan key spinner Muttiah Muralidharan will be playing on Tuesday, as he is struggling with a leg injury at the moment, but with a maximum of two matches before he retires he will be desperate to play for the last time in front of home crowd.

Australian right arm fast bowler, Shaun Tait has decided to retire from One Day International matches , following Australia’s poor show in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011.

Tait has already retired from the test cricket and has said that he will concentrate on being a Twenty20 player rather than trying to balance that with One Day Internationals.

World Cup  wasn’t a nice experience for Shaun Tait as he miserably failed on the slow, flat pitches of the sub-continent. In his last match against India, he bowled seven overs with figures of 1-52 and an average of 7.42. In his 7 world cup matches, he managed to get just 11 wickets.

Tait in a statement said:

"This is not a decision I have taken lightly but I believe it is one that will help me to prolong my cricketing career through the many Twenty20 avenues available.

In  reality, playing all year round for Australia and South Australia is not allowing my body to stand up as I would like and I do not want to be forced into retirement through career-ending injuries. 

Twenty20 cricket allows me to manage my body to a level where I feel I can continue to contribute to the game for some time yet.

My goal was to hopefully help Australia retain the ICC Cricket World Cup. However, with our involvement now finished I feel it is the perfect time to move on in a new direction.”

In his small career of 35 ODIs Tait took 62 wickets at an average of 23.56.
